Project Name: Supply Chain Resilience in Africa
Date: May 2022 – Ongoing
Location: Africa
Client: The World Bank (Bernard Aritua)
Description/Relevance: Developed a report to highlight the importance of Supply Chain Resilience in Africa. This was done by presenting global shocks and their impacts to contextualise the unique challenges that are felt by the African continent. Those challenges illustrated why increased resilience of supply chains is needed to respond to the threat of potential shocks and the impact of those that have already occurred. To understand the supply chain’s role in responding to these shocks, the report clarifies the difference between supply chains and value chains, along with what is meant by supply chain resilience and the trade-offs and strategies that are required to ensure it. The report utilised a specific methodology to select countries for further analysis based on their expected level of exposure to supply chain shocks. To that end, the economic density (internal view) and trade openness (external view) were used to classify each country according to level of exposure to shocks. Supply chain shocks were also classified to enable assessment of the influence a country’s economic density and trade openness has on certain shock exposures. A specific framework was developed and applied to each of the selected countries to assess their macrologistics flows and cost and analyse their macrologistics components to identify gaps and weaknesses that may lead to increased exposure to shocks and supply chain vulnerability. Ultimately, the result of the analysis was used to propose policy recommendations to increase the resilience of the select countries’ supply chains and identify possible improvement strategies for the rest of the continent.
